Our App Store jewel of the week has to be Toc and Roll – a music composition app for kids (iPad/iPhone), with which even preschool kids can compose their very own songs quite easily, plus have lots of fun whilst making some awesome tunes.
Realistic instruments
The samples with which the songs are being composed in Toc and Roll, come from real instruments and not from synthesizers. There’s a total of 9 various instruments available, each with plenty of samples, that cover all different music genres. Here’s a quick overview: Piano, glockenspiel, electric guitar, violin, drums, saxophone, trumpet, bass-guitar and various percussion instruments. All instruments are illustrated with little musicians and are sorted by colour, which is helpful for distinguishing the sound tracks later on.
How does the fun work?
After at least one musician has been chosen, the samples get presented on the right side of the screen, which can then be selected. The “sound parts” are simply dragged to the soundtrack. In addition, each soundtrack can be individually altered for example the volume or some additional effects can be added. The playback speed can be adjusted via a metronome.
Record your own voice & save songs
Kids can also record their own voices and sounds to their self-composed songs, as one soundtrack has been reserved for voice recordings. This way, some really amazing and unique, personal tunes can be created. Luckily the hard composed work of the children doesn’t get lost and can always be saved and edited if needed.
