»Spot«| Extraordinary Pinch to Zoom Picture Book App by David Wiesner (iPad)
✔ iPad | Picture Book App for Children & Adults
»Spot« is a really extraordinary picture book app for kids, which makes an extensive use of the so called “pinch to zoom” function of the iPad. With Spot, you seem to be able to endlessly zoom into the hand-drawn and beautifully detailed illustrations, in order to discover new scenes and worlds that always vary, instead of turning over one page at a time, as you usually do with books. We will now introduce you to the visual masterpiece which is exclusively available for the Apple iPad.
A Zoom Expedition
Starting point of the adventurous journey via zoom, is a simple ladybug, which is crawling across the white screen and whose spots can be enlarged to the extent, that a whole new world becomes visible, including an island and a mysterious house, which is inhabited by several ladybugs.
Kids will discover a pretty messy desk, if they zoom into the house and they can determine the progress of the journey, by using five various object on the desktop.
Kids choose how the journey is continued
Depending on whether kids select the newspaper, the letter, the pen, the cookie or the sandwich on the desktop, the journey will take a different course: The chosen object is also enlarged via the pinch to zoom function, until a new world appears, where new scenes and worlds are hidden.
The app also changes into different perspectives quite often, which provides for plenty of alternation: Whilst the zoom-journeys are often presented from the top-view, there are also passages, where kids get to change to a first-person perspective, in order to look around better.
In the following screen shot-mashup, you can see how we’ve originally come from a mouse hideout and zoomed into a newspaper picture. Whilst enlarging the picture, the printing grid turns out to be a top-view shot of an umbrella scene. Surprises as such, really make this app stand out from usual picture book apps for kids.
Inspiring the Imagination – Without Narration
The app deliberately misses out on text displays, narrator and by the way, also on mini games. The illustrations speak for themselves and what kind of imaginative stories are being told inside of them, needs to be discovered and explored by kids themselves. Mind you, the App Store description hints out, what the visitable places are called and what kind of characters can be encountered when traveling. The 5 main cities are:
• Lower Rügg, a tiny world beneath an armchair
• Mekanikos, a world of robots
• Oceana Prime, an underwater world
• Katzaluna, a world of cats
• And an intergalactic space station

»Spot« Picture Book App Rating
David Wiesner’s Spot is without a doubt, a unique picture book app and one of the most interesting kids app new releases of this year. If you like being surprised and want to make a brand new picture book experience, we can definitely and highly recommend you the app Spot. Besides the captivating zoom discoveries, we are also very fond of the fact, that kids get to regularly decide how the journey proceeds. It may take a little time to get used to the worlds not having a classical ending, due to the seamless transition – and kids will therefore need to find their own end.
