Oratio’s Flute Master | Kids App for Learning to Play the Recorder
✔ iPad + iPhone ✔ Android ✔ Windows ✔ Mac | App For Kids Ages 5-10+ yrs.
Today, we want to introduce you to Oratio’s Flute Master, which is a rather fancy kids app for which you are going to need a real recorder in order to play the app! The innovative and educational flute game mainly uses the acoustic input of the recorder, by recognizing the played notes via the tablet’s or smartphone’s microphone and uses the sounds as a control method. Sounds interesting? It sure is!
First of all, a short tutorial teaches kids the unusual input method via the recorder. Meanwhile they also meet the pirate named Oratio, who takes them on a journey through the world of music and the so-called magic flute tower. Inside the tower lives the friendly dragon Cornelius, who urgently needs kids help: naughty bats have their eyes on his strawberry supply and those can only be kept away, if kids play the recorder…
Tower = Flute
The dragon Cornelius can spit fire from out of his window to defend his tower, but he doesn’t know from which level the thieving bats are approaching the tower. Whilst kids check to see on which level the bats come flying on, they’ll know which holes to hold down on their recorder, because the tower symbolizes a flute and each window represents a hole of a flute. The bat’s tail can vary in length and also represents the tone length. That way, children learn to play different melodies and flute songs, without having learnt to read sheet music beforehand.
24 Flute Songs available in Full Version
Three exercises can be tried out for free in Oratio’s Flute Master, something we can truly recommend you. This way, you get to see whether or not your recorder is compatible with the app and whether your kids like the game or not. The full version can be unlocked via one in-app purchase only and offers 24 exercises and songs. Important: Only when you’ve finished all three songs of one level with at least a bronze award, the next songs of the full version will be unlocked.
As a really nice extra, the app offers a separate sheet of music for each song, with which the exercises and songs of the main game can be practiced independently. There are both black color-coded sheet music to choose from, something we’re really fond of. However, the sheet music does not automatically scroll down whilst playing, which kind of disturbs the game flow. Even a print function would be desirable.
- It’s best if you play the app in a calm environment – disturbing noises can influence the sound recognition.
- If the recorder is not recognized, hold the recorder closer to your tablet’s or smartphone’s microphone. You should however, also know where the microphone on your device is, because those little holes can be hidden quite well at times.
- Kids need to hold the tone so long until the bat’s tail has flown past the tower.
- You can set a delay in milliseconds in the settings, if your kids tend to play the incoming notes a little too late. So you can increase the game fun and enthusiasm significantly by just readjusting this setting a little!
Oratio’s Flute Master | Kids App Rating
Oratio’s Flute Master is practically a must have for kids who have a recorder and a tablet handy, especially as the game is free to try. The concept and the implementation is really good. Thanks to the magic tower, kids can simply read off it, as to which holes to hold on their recorder and with the help of the bats, they receive feedback throughout the game, whether they’ve hit the right tunes. The rather unusual input method via the recorder is of course a special highlight of the app and works surprisingly good when we tested it (see our QuickStart Tips).
Nevertheless, we noticed two things, that could be improved, which shouldn’t however, keep you from trying the app out. Which two things those are, can be read in our following overview:
(+) Innovative input method via a real recorder or flute
(+) Especially composed music for the app only
(+) Many exercises in the full version
(+) Motivating awards
(-) Sheet of music do not scroll down automatically
(-) Screen is not fully used (black bars)
