Once upon a Story | fun & entertaining storytelling app for and with children
✔ iPad | Family app
Storytelling and making up imaginary stories is very educational and valuable for children, as it does not only encourage children’s ability to speak, but it also furthers their imagination and expressiveness. »Once upon a Story« inspires children’s imagination with witty and interesting picture cards, whilst they’re telling their stories and is basically similar to the app “Rory’s Story Cubes”.
The app is basically self-explanatory with it’s colourful picture cards and is not only suitable for children, but can be used and played by the whole family.
Tell a Silly Story
In the main menu, kids can choose between three different modes, which offer lots of alternation. Basically, various different story cards are randomly chosen in all of the game modes, with various characters and objects on them, which children need to use in order to tell some interesting stories.
In the classic mode, kids can check out the story cards first and take as much time as they like, whilst using their imagination to come up with some awesome stories. Unfortunately, the story cards cannot be moved, however it is possible to change the order during the narration. A total of 9 story cards are shown in each mode and present things like kings, cheese, vampires, clowns, bunnies, snowflakes, magic lamps, ghosts, keys and occasionally even submarines and octopuses.
30 Second Story
During this fast-paced game, kids get to tell a silly tale, whilst the story cards are now shown one after the other, whereby kids can only choose between three cards this time. This gameplay surely differs from the classic mode. The aim is to use as many story cards as possible within 30 seconds of storytelling.
Share a Silly Story
We find the multiplayer variant particularly interesting, in which the players get to alternate during the same storytelling, i.e. each one tells a passage of the story with a picture card and passes the iPad on to the next player, which means, it’s a Pass-And-Play mode, where kids make up a story with a friend or family member using 12 Story Cards.
YouTube video trailer
In our video trailer you can see some of the story cards and the way the app works, but we’re not going to tell you a story.
Once upon a Story | kids app conclusion
It’s always interesting to see how imaginative kids can be whilst telling a tale with this app. Especially in the multiplayer mode, where the story gets some adventurous twists. If you’re interested in a creative and challenging family game, then we can highly recommend you Once upon a Story.
