My first Clock – Learn to tell the time app for kids by Ravensburger
✔ iPad + iPhone | kids app for ages 4-5 years
Ravensburger digital have been very productive this year and have published several kids apps so far. The most recent one is a Clock app, with which kids get to learn to tell and read the time. “My first Clock” is available for only $1.99 and is offered as a universal app for iPad and iPhone.
A clock for kids with a friendly face greets kids and introduces them to all of the various games and learning sections of the app. The app is separated into 5 areas with different tasks that we’re going to talk about now:
In the first exercise set the clock, kids get to know the clock and how it works in a free and playful way, by simply by turning the hour or minute hand. That way, they learn that the hands move clockwise at different paces and the minute hand drives the hour hand forward.
In the second exercise, kids get to solve a clock-face puzzle, where all of the components need to be assigned to the correct places and in the right order whilst the parts are also named by the narrator. A very useful exercise to help kids to get familiar with the clock’s array.
In the third exercise, kids learn to set the time correctly. The desired time is demonstrated with digits and also via narration. Unfortunately, the app is limited to full hours only – the minute hand is not involved in this exercise.
The fourth game doesn’t offer an interactive exercise, but is used as an explanation of halves and quarters of an hour. With the help of a chocolate cake, kids learn the usual partition of the clock and therefore the key for the next exercise. In the fifth game, kids need to differentiate between quarter to, quarter past and half past – the cake is shown as a guideline.
Professional narration
With the info-button you get to the theory part within the exercise, which is rather good. The games have professional narration and are presented to the kids with praise and encouragement.

My first Clock | kids app rating
My first clock by Ravensburger offers a child-friendly start into the world of time and clocks. The app is especially suitable for kindergarten kids and preschool kids ages 4+ due to the educational structure and scope. We’re kind of missing a difficulty level for older kids, which would perhaps involve the minute hand in the set the time game, like other clock and telling time apps do. The exercise are however satisfactory enough for the age group 4-5 years.
A very nice detail: The clock always shows the actual real time in the first mode.

(+) child-friendly design
(+) friendly narration
(+) good explanations
(+) basic introduction to the subject without demanding too much
