Math Tiger | educational math app for kids in primary school
✔ iPad | primary school kids in grades 1-4
The Mildenberger Verlag is a well-known German publisher, who produced some very successful educational books for children and has represented those on the App Store for quite some time now. So for the first time ever, they’re publishing an educational math learning game called “Math Tiger” for the iPad. Math Tiger is very popular in German school books and learning materials. We have of course, not only looked at the books, but also checked out the Math Tiger app, which we would like to introduce to you now.
Primary school grades 1-4
Math Tiger covers all four basic arithmetic operations and therefore covers all four primary school grades. You can choose the grades in the profile settings, where the difficulty level automatically adapts to the kids mathematical ability and knowledge.
The Arithmetic master
Kids enter the palace of the mysterious Arithmetic master as soon as they start the app. An English narrator is lending the Arithmetic master it’s voice, who reads out all of the descriptions, calculations and also presents the games.
The Arithmetic master turns his hourglass around at the beginning of each game round. Each game round includes 5 calculations, that kids need to solve and the answers can be entered and confirmed via the number keys at the bottom of the screen. If kids have entered the results wrong, a small hint is given out. This is for example, how the Arithmetic master tells children that the wanted number is either bigger or smaller. If kids still get the answers wrong during the second time round, the Arithmetic master announces the result and encourages kids to try again. Only if the master is happy with the kids’ arithmetic progress, they get to qualify themselves for the Tiger calculation.
The Tiger calculations need to be answered by kids as quickly as possible within 90 seconds, in order to be registered in the High score table of the respective grade. A thorough feedback about the wrong answers of the tiger calculations is given at the end.
Here are some examples of the questions from all grades:
* Divide 20 in half
* What is 5 x 16?
* What is double the amount of 3708?
* How much is 812000 + 4500?
As you can see, the range of numbers go up to hundreds of thousands. As these questions need to be calculated in the head, the multi-digit numbers are written underneath each other to make it easier for kids.
Kids can create their own profiles, which enables more kids to play the app, including some very funny portrait pictures, which are provided in this app. Alternatively, kids can either take their own pictures with the iPad camera, or upload their own pictures from the photo album on the iPad.

Math Tiger | educational Maths app rating
Math Tiger is a surprisingly low-priced math learning app, with which kids can practise their mental arithmetics in a brilliant way. Other maths app developers tend to stint with narrations in their apps, whereas Math Tiger has been fully translated into two languages and also covers all of the school grades for only $ 1.99. The app could be a little bit more lively for our sake. A High score list is nice, but we’d prefer some collectibles and awards.
(+) All basic arithmetic operations & school grades
(+) Automatic difficulty level
(+) Various profiles
(+) English & German narration
(-) a bit too sober (no collectibles, awards etc.)
