Wreck-it Ralph
Games collection from the awesome animated Disney film
Ever had enough of something, which made you wanna wreck something? Well, we know that Ralph surely wants and needs to wreck things on a daily basis. If you haven’t yet seen the new Disney movie “Wreck-it Ralph”, perhaps you’ll be a little bit baffled with the Disney app version of wreck-it Ralph. The app offers five different arcade games, which don’t really match or fit together at all actually. We have an old Retro game, a Doodle jump clone, a kart race and two kind of shooting games. How all these games slot together, i guess you’ll only find out if you have seen the kids film, which is of course also very entertaining for adults too. If you do know the film, then you will know how to classify the games.
If you want, you can check out the official trailer below.
The story starts with the Retro game “Fix-it Felix Jr.”, where Ralph is kind of facing a problem: He’s clearly had enough of constantly being the bad guy in the arcade game. If he doesn’t keep on demolishing the High-rise building as he does every day, whereupon the player needs to fix his mess with the little character Felix Jr, the old arcade game would be switched off for good. Ralph is still playing along nicely if only for the app itself, so that the Handyman Felix Jr. is able to fix all of the windows and is finally able to throw Ralph off the roof, with the help from all of the other inhabitants. Ralph really suffers from this, but he will reveal this, whilst he’s at a support group for Superheroes, only in the film though, which you really need to watch.
We’ll continue with the second game – the “Sweet Climber”, which is a so called clone of Doodle jump.
In this game, we get the chance to meet Ralph from his sweet side, as he jumps from one candy stick to the next, to get to his golden medal for heroes, which he will never really reach, well at least in the game, as game number 2 is an endless game, where you’re never supposed to reach the end of the game. As soon as Ralph starts to hug a huge Marshmallow and starts to fly past all of the candy sticks, we’re pretty amused by the sight of this and end up playing more rounds than we thought we would.
Game number 3 is called “Hero’s Duty” and is a dark shooting game, which is exactly like in the film, just that it is an arcade game where you need to blast cy-bugs in level after level. These type of game category is also known as Dual stick shooter, as you navigate a blonde mercenary with two displayed dual sticks, similar to other console game pads. The level isn’t really that big and simply varies only through the numbers of cy-bugs in each level, which appear on the screen, in many different attack waves. This will definitely not be one of the parents favorite games and not the favorite scene of the film, however it is indispensable as it is part of the plot from the film.
We would have preferred an alternative game for the app, as a lot more arcade games were shown in the film, which would have been nice to see in the app. As we recommend Wreck-it Ralph for kids ages 10+ anyway, we guess that boys at that age will most probably have fun with this game anyway.
Game number 4 is – “Turbo Time”, a mini game kart-race game, which you have to steer with either a little steering wheel or arrow keys. Who you’re actually steering and what this little character is all about, we’re not really supposed to say, as we’ll spoil the surprise of the film. We can however use the quotes of the iTunes description:
• Enter the race for gold, and drive at turbo speed!
• Roll through fiery speed boosts and avoid obstacles to gain an edge over your competitors!
• Sweet 16-bit graphics that add a retro feel to this classic arcade racer!
Game number 5 – “Flight Commander” has only just recently appeared in the Wreck-it Ralph app. We got to say, when Disney says that they’re going to add more games, levels or other extras, they really do stick to what they announce, even with app that cost $ 0.99.
Even if the fifth game isn’t really our kind of game, it does fit into the context of the film again. In this graphically pretty impressive mini arcade game, you’re going to especially need skills for dodging obstacles which can simply be destroyed by shooting.
Wreck-it Ralph kids app rating
Content-wise, not every game of this app hits our taste in games, especially the shooting games could have easily been replaced with other mini-games of the film. We do think that Disney has produced a fairly comprehensive game package for only $ 0.99, where probably everyone will find one or the other game which they like the most. It’s a shame though, that the real kart-race hasn’t made it in this game, which would have been pretty awesome. Disney might realize how much catching-up is actually needed for the category “kart-racing games” and perhaps they’ll produce a special “wreck-it Ralph karts” app for iPad, iPhone, Android and Kindle fire devices – that would be pretty impressive!
