Nick Jr. Draw & Play | outstanding creative Art app for kids
We have seen and tested a lot of drawing apps for kids, but we have never yet come across such a spectacular drawing app like “Nick Jr. Draw & Play”. The word ‘Play’ in the app title already hints out the fact that this app is not only about drawing, but that there is so much more fun activities for kids to explore and discover, more than you’d have with any other simple drawing app on the App Store.
Of course the most important feature of an art app has to be the drawing as such. We’re just going to let you know how we actually rate art apps for kids, but before we do so, let me just tell you that Nick Jr. has most definitely met all important criteria and let us be astonished by it’s awesomeness with Dora the explorer, Diego, Team Umizoomi, the Bubble Guppies, and Peter Rabbit and his friends Benjamin Bunny and Lily Bobtail!
A reasonable drawing app for kids should have:
* a soft drawing line, which keeps up with the pace of the child’s finger and it should draw nice round curves.
* a comprehensive and lucid color palette
* all functions and features should invite kids and should be presented in an attractive and intelligible way. Note: “Paint & Play” will not only present all features and functions in a reasonable way, but it even explains everything by using voice output to help kids with this app.
Nick Jr.’s Art app offers a big range of drawing utensils, which makes us perfectly happy in every way.
Chalk, Wax crayons, Felt tip pens, Charcoal pens, coloring pencils, Paint brushes and Water colors are all available for kids to experiment with.
Each drawing utensil is offered in three types of thicknesses, so that kids can change between those, whenever they feel like it.
Several backgrounds for the drawings, thereunder sticker backgrounds because as you probably guessed, lots of stickers are available.
Special animated stickers – perhaps the most beautiful and best stickers we have seen in an art or drawing app so far, because all of them are animated! Simply touch them after they’ve been placed.
E-cards – a nice idea to create some beautiful, personal Greeting cards or maybe the next invitation for a birthday party.
Collages – this app offers a wide range of objects for a collage. By the way, each category offers different objects, which means if kids choose the money category, they don’t just stamp with the same coin, but they constantly vary and alternate. How lovingly this app has been designed is also proven by the gorgeous sounds and effects of the collage objects, which is meant to reveal a song if you stamp them quickly after one another. This is really outstanding!
Unique features all in one unique Art app for kids
Now we’re going to introduce you to some special and fantastic features of this drawing app, which you haven’t seen in any other drawing app before. Those features are especially joyful and can be combined with all the other functions.
Splatter tops or Color gyroscope – those can be moved and the colors can be splashed all over the place – we have not seen this in any other drawing app before.
Magic wand – Kids start off by drawing a sparkly glitter colored line, which will then magically transform itself. The magic color green transforms itself into wild green leaves, which fly around and the color black will make bats scatter about. Truly amazing!
Fireworks – If there’s one thing we did not expect in an art or drawing app for kids, it would be fireworks which work like this: kids choose a firework button with one of the Nickelodeon characters on them, place them onto the paper (it’s best to place them on black paper) and ignite the fireworks by simply pressing on them as much as they want.
Surprise blocks– those work similar to the fireworks. Once you placed them, they hide a little surprise for kids ready to be discovered.
Bouncy balls – the bouncy balls are not just balls which bounce from wall to wall, they actually interact with other objects which are placed like a sticker or a surprise block and react via the tilt function of the iPad and iPhone.
Camera function, animated tutorials, idea function
It was pretty predictive for Nickelodeon to offer a thorough tutorial for all the many options of this app. A young narrator explains all the features and functions and offers her help at any time to kids via touch of a button, in a very child-friendly manner. Kids can also gather some ideas in the idea section, where kids cannot only draw on canvas, but also on photos, which can be taken via camera function.
