Disney Planes: Storybook Deluxe | great story and game fun all in one comprehensive kids app
Just here on time for the upcoming new Disney movie “Planes”, we would like to introduce you to the deluxe Disney storybook app for kids. Instead of making Cars 3 as a sequel, Disney decided to place their main focus a little higher up in the air to let us see some cute planes with faces, which are the main characters of the film, but also of the app.
Storybook deluxe – definitely no hollow promise
We can already say that all storybooks by Disney so far, have been comprehensive and costlier produced, than a lot of other new storybook apps for kids. We have a lush amount of 41 pages for the interactive story in the app itself. “Planes” therefore beats Monster University and Cars 2 – World Grand Prix storybook apps.
All pages have been lavishly animated and are also presented by a professional narrator. It does take a while until the story comes to an end, especially as some mini flying missions were integrated, which will give you a little pretaste of the independent game section, which we’ll introduce to you now.
All Planes in one wonderful flight game
The second part of the Planes app is a propper flight game with many levels and all important planes of the film. Both the routes and the aircraft, must however, be gradually unlocked, but this should rather increase the motivation.
You navigate the planes via tilt-function which can be a little tricky for younger children at first and also quite challenging. But since the planes can’t break or crash and the controller is evenly calibrated, it should be no big deal.
You’ll even need to fly through a railway tunnel and land on an aircraft carrier in the diversified flight missions.
Don’t worry though, Disney has thought of the children and divided the tasks into three difficulty levels. Overall, we really can recommend the app also to older kids at a higher primary school age. Even we love to fly one or the other round with the iconic Planes.
Who wouldn’t want to fly a round with Dusty with awesome graphics as they are in this great app?
Oh No! – One in-app purchase of 0.99$
The planes bundle where four more planes can be unlocked cannot be unlocked by playing, they can only be bought as a bundle for 0.99$ as an in-app purchase. This is quite rude, considering the high purchase price of the app!
The background of this seems to be the extras section of the app, where you can activate a camera scanner. This extra is relatively unspectacular.
Nevertheless, you can scan any “Disney Plane logo” once a day with this scanner and receive one out of 10 profiles of the planes. You can also unlock the four exclusive planes with this scanner, if you scan the back of a book, which you can get in any US-Store. For the European countries however, the in-app purchase was introduced instead of this cross-promotion.
From our parents point of view, we couldn’t really care less and ask the following of Disney: Give us the Flying Pirates Dusty, Bravo, Echo and Fliegenhosen for free – the app is expensive enough. Point deduction.

We really like the Planes app – but somewhere, it should be clear that we do not agree with the pricing policy. So unfortunately, the app ends up with 4 stars and not with the Editor’s Choice award.
