AR Flashcards – Animal Alphabet | kids learn with Augmented Reality
Flashcards are really popular by kids app developers. You simply take the letters of the alphabet, place an animal beside it and add sounds and audio response to it: “A” for “Apple”.
Not very spectacular. However, if this kids app concept get’s enriched with a great technique such as “augmented reality”, we’ll definitely start to find it pretty exciting and worth mentioning.
What you’ll need to start this iPad and iPhone AR app, are the so called “AR-cards” with the AR-marker. Of course the app developer provided a PDF document on their homepage for you to print these out for free. You will find the link to their website inside the app.
Simply print out the AR-cards (it would be best to use thick paper such as photo paper) so that it doesn’t get creased and crinkled. You can also open the PDF on your iPad or iPhone and use another iDevice (if available) for the use of the actual app. This is what it looks like if you’d use your iPad:
With the AR Flashcards animals app you get a lot of content, all in all 26 different animals – one for each letter, whereas other augmented reality apps, are usually quite miserly with contents. Of course it is really tempting to use more than one AR-card, when you have that many AR animals available to play around and learn with. The AR app for kids has therefore fully convinced us. The limitation of cards on one screen, seems to be by around 10 cards, which is extremely remarkable.
Of course, it depends on the angle of your camera. It’s advisory to use the camera head-on towards the cards and then slowly move in a sideways angle.
The AR projection is fairly solid as long as you stick to our advice to use stable photo paper, so that the cards are laid out nice and straight. By the way, the white border should not be cut out, as this helps with the AR-detection.
The AR animals can be turned and this is great fun for kids, as they can view and arrange their animals from all angles. My daughter always gets her little Playmobil figures out and starts to play some really cute and interesting roleplay scenes.
Another fantastic feature is the audio response to each letter and animal. As with all flashcards, you can press on each animal on your screen, to get a response to either the letter or animal. This is a really great educational use and feature for children.
Learning with Flashcards hasn’t been this much fun in a long time. This AR app is a great opportunity for kids to “show off” infront of family and friends, who aren’t yet familiar with the “augmented reality”!
