Best Halloween Apps for Kids – 2014
This year we want to introduce you to the best Halloween apps for kids. All in all we can recommend you to an incredible total of 34 spooky apps.
While other kids games already woo with monsters, ghosts and pumpkins on their app icons, you discover that other kids apps also have some Halloween game elements and levels, if you take a closer look.
By the way, we are already aware of the fact that some parents will not agree with some of our Halloween recommendations, as witches, ghosts and zombies are obviously terrible and scary. By looking at our overview, you’ll notice that the creepiness of the apps, are very different and vary from app to app, which let’s us hope, that all parents here, will at least like or find one interesting app for their children or even themselves.
You can use our fear factor as a reference point: low, medium, high
All apps are available for iOS and the first 7 apps on our list, are also available for Android.
To save Android users from sifting through the whole, fairly long list, we start with the Halloween apps that are also available on Google Play.
We’d like to point out, that the app ranking on our list is not a rating.
1. Mr Shingu’s Paper Halloween – Origami App
✔ iPad + iPhone ✔ Android ✔ Kindle Fire | Fear factor: medium
If you haven’t already treated your kids with the funny origami app Mr. Shingu’s Paper Zoo, you now have the opportunity to get to know the game for free. Instead of Zoo animals there are Halloween characters, figures and objects in the Halloween edition, which are a little scary and spooky, i.e. ghosts, goblins and of course pumpkins. Awesome: Even though the app is brand new and pretty comprehensive, it is offered for free and without any in-app purchases or adverts.

2. Magic Coloring – a draw by numbers game with Halloween motives
✔ iPad + iPhone ✔ Android | Fear factor: low
The subject Halloween is a little hidden in this painting by numbers app “Magic Coloring”, even if the magician on the app icon would probably be able to get free entry on every kids party. Besides the Halloween motives, are also many various other subjects and pictures waiting to be discovered.

3. Tizzy Seasons – four seasons games for toddlers
✔ iPad + iPhone ✔ Android | Fear factor: low
Tizzy Seasons is a fantastic seasons app for kids, which also has a pumpkin game for Halloween. We can honestly recommend Tizzy Seasons for all those parents, who aren’t very fond of Halloween, especially as the “fall” season is equally presented to the kids, like all the other seasons in this kids app. You can expect many various mini games to each season, from which the Halloween pumpkin-carving game is only one of them. The candle-light inside the pumpkin has been very well-made. You can read our review for more information.

4. Mystery Machine – Halloween Game
✔ iPad + iPhone ✔ Android | Fear factor: high
An interesting, if somewhat edgy Halloween app for kids called the Mystery Machine. It’s basically all about combining three different Halloween objects and the result is, that a machine will create a strange creature. However, you have to find out the correct combination first, whilst trying it out through numerous experiments, which can’t be done logically unfortunately. At least the helpers will hint out some new combinations after a while.

7. Doodle Jump – Halloween costumes & levels
✔ iPad + iPhone ✔ Android | Fear factor: medium
There’s hardly any need in having to introduce Doodle Jump to anyone anymore, as many already know this game, as it is one of the best-selling apps on the App Store. 8. Angry Birds Seasons – Ham’O’ween levels
✔ iPad + iPhone ✔ Android | Fear factor: medium
To have a Halloween App presentation without Angry Birds Seasons is almost unimaginable, especially as this part of Angry Birds is mainly known for it’s seasons. Each year, new level packs to each season get released and of course also for the Halloween festivities. This is also very interesting for children because of their free level updates for the Angry Birds app. The difficulty level should not be underestimated, we’re still looking for a child mode with infinite birds in this Angry Birds app. We therefore recommend this Halloween app for older kids.

9. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse – Paint & Play: Halloween scenes
✔ iPad – Halloween App for kids | Fear factor: medium
This app has been on the App Store charts for weeks, perhaps this is also because of the Halloween special, which you can currently select as an option in the app. We will introduce you to this app more thoroughly soon, but we can say this much: Basically it’s all about coloring in the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. The coloring pages are rendered as a 3D object and placed in the interactive landscapes.
How it all looks in action, you can best watch in our video preview.
A great feature in the Halloween section of the app is also the pumpkin carving, which we demonstrate in the video (at the very end).

10. TinyMons Halloween Season – Multiplayer kids app
✔ iPad | Fear factor: medium
This Halloween search game app is brand new and great fun. Up to four kids can play this game on the iPad at once. Lots of various little monsters swarm around on the screen, whilst a certain combination of monster needs to be found. Kids need to have very good reactions and need to be fast if they want to win. The sound effects and Halloween music really match the game well. It is also possible to play this game in a single player mode, where you basically play against your own high-score.

13. Spooky Story Dice – Halloween Story Dice App
✔ iPad + iPhone | Fear factor: depends on you
An interesting Halloween app idea is Dice with images, which each stand for a spooky story, which has to be invented and told out of the cuff. The images on the dice obviously match the Halloween atmosphere however, this app is also available with normal images as a normal edition for captivating and funny stories. Nevertheless, the technical realization of the app is rather boring, as the dice don’t really turn. Only still images are shown.

17. Math vs Zombies – Halloween Maths app
✔ iPad + iPhone – Halloween App for kids | Fear factor: high
This Maths Zombie apps has been thoroughly updated and worked on several times. In the last year, the game reminded us of an Ego-shooter, which wasn’t favored by parents. Now however, the player no longer holds a gun in his hand, with which one would shoot zombies, but instead, through solving arithmetic problems, the Zombies are transformed back into normal happy kids. Four different worlds with numerous levels provide for enough variety. All basic operations may be practiced in different degrees of difficulty.

There are three different sticker apps available by Buildo, thereunder one about the subject rescue (Fire service, police, sea rescue and emergency doctor), which we like the most. Just in time for Halloween however, kids like to visit Frankenstein and co. in the spooky Buildo Museum. Kids can decorate three panoramic landscapes with about 100 interactive stickers and can therefore create their own stories. Here’s the link to our review, (you’ll find the Museum version at the bottom of the Buildo review).

✔ iPad + iPhone | Fear factor: high
Also from the “Singing Nutcracker app”, there is a special Halloween edition, which scarily funny. Fearless children cannot only put nuts into Frankenstein’s, Dracula’s, werewolf’s and a zombie’s mouth, but also their own words and phrases, which are then played backwards and badly distorted, whilst the gentlemen wiggle their mouths. In addition, a small keyboard is displayed, with which the Nutcracker can brought to sing. A pretty original Halloween app, we reckon.

22. Defense and Attack – Connect Four 3D Halloween game
✔ iPad + iPhone | Fear factor: high
Behind the martial name “Defense & Attack”, hides a dark Connect Four game in 3D. By including the third dimension, the complexity of the classic game is increased and makes it particularly suitable and more interesting for older children and adults. Beside the neutral wooden design, you can choose a macabre Halloween look, where little skulls are speared on metal posts – yet alone for this reason, the game is only suitable for older kids.

Tip: We use this Halloween app as a dry run for the real pumpkin carving session. This way it is easier to try out new facial expressions and kids can get inspired by this app too.

✔ iPad – Halloween App for kids | Fear factor: medium
Unfortunately this Hello Kitty app finances itself with an ad-banner, at least it’s placed at the top of the screen where it’s less annoying. Since advertising has no place in childrens apps, we recommend you especially for this app, to activate the airplane mode for the iPad / iPhone – it’s one opportunity to get rid off and deactivate such ad-banners. After that, you should no longer have anything standing in the way of playing this little dress-up game and Hello Kitty can be dressed with various Halloween costumes.
